Sliding arm moves to position itself tight next to your work-piece to support the ACME threaded screw. By comparison, when a 3" c-clamp is used to do the job of a 1" c-clamp, the point of support for the screw does not move… leaving the extended screw to do all the work. The result can be a clamp that "walks"... or worse, a screw that bends or breaks.
